Steamy Reads for a Frosty Valentine's Day

As you probably know, this Sunday is Valentine's Day. Whether you have plans to spend this exceptionally freezing February 14th with a loved one or not, it's a pretty good time to pick up some spicy reads. I've listed a few of my favorites below!

Unteachable is the story of Maise O'Malley, a girl who is 100% comfortable with the fact that she's "white trash" to most people. She knows she has daddy issues, her mother does unspeakable things for money and drugs, and she cannot wait to get out of her crap town. When she meets the sexy, older Evan, it's a quick fling after a fun night at the carnival in town. But then she walks into school on her first day of senior year and Evan is now Mr. Wilke, the teacher of the film studies class she's been dying to take.

This book is beautifully written. Raeder writes gorgeous, dizzying, colorful prose. What should've been a one-night stand becomes painful longing and a confusing lust that just might be something more. The reader knows that Maise and Evan will ultimately succumb to what has become forbidden, but the anticipation and tension is still fantastic. I think most people assume that the romance genre is filled with horrible euphemisms and cringe-worthy scenes. I'm not an expert, but I've read enough books with overuse of the man calling the woman "baby" (I seriously hate that, but I deal). None of that stuff here.

For many (myself included), a dude's chest on a book cover is kind of embarrassing and a little ridiculous. Can you take a book seriously when that's how they market it? Don't let it fool you, though. This book is SO DELIGHTFUL. Yes, it's sexy and hot and blah blah but it's also a super fun read. Think of your favorite romantic comedies, especially ones where bets are placed or projects are assigned (She's All That, Never Been Kissed, etc.). This is basically that in book form. EEEE!

Our main characters are college students Hannah and Garrett. Hannah is the only person passing her Philosophical Ethics class. Garrett is the captain of the hockey team and is desperate to ace the makeup exam to keep his GPA up. When he spots Hannah's grade, he immediately starts badgering her to tutor him. She's pretty adamant against it, but he realizes there's something she wants - the attention of a hot new classmate. He offers to take her to parties he will be at and butter the guy up in exchange for some tutoring. Hannah is just head-over-heels enough to try it out. Of course, sometimes the person you should be with is right in front of you.

This book is like a big smile. I loved the banter between the characters. You will giggle and swoon. Please read. (It's also the first book in "The Off-Campus" series. Though each is a standalone, I think they are worth reading in pub. order so as not to spoil anything. Also, I haven't read the others yet but have heard great things!)

I just might be saving the best for last here. There's one way to describe Hoover's (or CoHo, as the fans and I like to call her) writing: ADDICTIVE. This was the first book of hers that I picked up and I promptly bought and pre-ordered everything else she's written and published. I'm obsessed with this woman's work.

Ugly Love is about a man named Miles and a woman named Tate who start up a strictly physical relationship. Miles is a pilot for a commercial airline, so he travels a lot. Tate is in grad school and working as an RN, so she doesn't have a lot of free time. It makes sense. Of course, the growing chemistry between the two seems like more than just lust. Unfortunately, Miles doesn't seem to want to open his heart up and there's a reason why.

Oh CoHo. I love her so. This book was a one-day read for me, something that rarely happens. Once you start, you'll be desperate to know what happened and what will happen next. If you enjoy this book, I highly recommend her others. If sex scenes aren't your jam (why are you still reading this?), this is her "hottest" book, so you can still pick up her other stuff if you're curious.

Have a good Valentine's Day, no matter how you spend it!
